This morning, I published a post outlining the top 5 most vulnerable state lawmakers ahead of next year’s Republican primary election.
I omitted one of the worst offenders. Whoops. Let me rectify that mistake right now.
State Rep. Jack Nelsen from Jerome is certainly one of the most vulnerable lawmakers in the state. The GOP central committees in both Lincoln and Blaine counties — representing 64% of the district’s precincts — unanimously censured him for voting against core GOP principles.
Nelsen refused to sign the Idaho GOP’s “Integrity in Affiliation” form and then doubled down by voting against key conservative bills on school choice, parental rights, mask mandates, and protecting kids from indecency. When a lawmaker repeatedly sides with the left and ignores the will of Republican voters, it’s no surprise the grassroots fight back.
Conservative firebrand Lyle Johnstone has signed up to take on Nelsen, but there’s talk of another challenger jumping into the race. It’s likely a third candidate would split the vote and usher Nelsen right back into office, allowing him to continue voting for bigger government at every turn.
This race is one to watch in 2026.
